2011 DUNDEE SPORTS AWARDS
 
The 2011 Dundee Sports Awards, sponsored by 'Protecting People in Dundee', took place at the Caird Hall on Wednesday 22nd February. Following the highest number of nominations ever, 250 people attended the event at its new venue, to celebrate the outstanding contributions and achievements of Dundee people in sport in 2011.
 
The winners were:
 
-          Tayside Audio Visual - Coach of the Year – Paul Boath (Tayside Musketeers)
-          GA Engineering - Community Coach of the Year – Steven Cuthbert (Menzieshill Whitehall Swimming & Water Polo Club)
-          Sportscotland /Active Schools - Lifetime Commitment – Drew Burnett (Dundee city Aquatics)
-          Graham Construction – Young Volunteer of the Year – Shauna Urquhart (the Brae RDA)
-          SportDundee – Volunteer of the Year Award – Gerry Cahill (Dundee Wildcats Taekwon Do)
-          Dundee Sportsman’s Dinner – Young Team of the Year – Tayside Musketeers Basketball Club
-          University of Abertay – Team of the Year – Dundee Wanderers Hockey Ladies 1st Team
-          Evening Telegraph – Club of the Year – Dundee United Sports Club
-          Dundee City Disability Sports – Jenny Wood Allen Memorial  Trophy – Ian Bryce (DCDS)
-          Leisure & Culture Dundee – Young Sports Person of the Year – Louise Fox (Menzieshill Whitehall Swimming & Water Polo Club)
-          Redwood Leisure Ltd – Sports Person of the Year – Vikki Bunce (Dundee Wanderers Hockey Club)
-          Heal Physiotherapy – Sporting School of the Year (Primary) – Ballumbie Primary School
-          Heal Physiotherapy – Sporting School of the Year (secondary) – Grove Academy
 
In addition to the award presentations, the guests enjoyed a meal and were entertained by the Urban Moves Dance Company, Funky Feet / Urban Moves Dance coaches and guest speaker, Eve Muirhead.
 
The event began with Gavin Robertson, Divisional Commander of Tayside Police, providing guests with information on the work of 'Protecting People in Dundee' and the role sports clubs can play in keeping people safe.

Congratulations to all the winners and thank you to all the sponsors, especially 'Protecting People in Dundee' for ensuring the event was a huge success.
 

JENNY WOOD ALLEN SPORT RELIEF MILE
 
The Sports Development Section of Leisure & Culture Dundee with the support of SportDundee and local sports clubs held the Jenny Wood Allen Sport Relief Mile at Camperdown Park on Sunday 25 March 2012.
 
The event, named in memory of the inspirational local runner and part of the national Sport Relief campaign, attracted more than 500 runners to participate in the 6 mile, 3 mile and 1 mile races.  The top 3 males & females from each race were presented with trophies:
 
6 Mile: 
1st Male Ian McNulty (38:41), 2nd Male Craig Love (38:54), 3rd Male Paul Leonard (39:46)
1st Female Carly Kirkpatrick (44:33), 2nd Female Jillian Sherriff (46:20), 3rd Female Brinny Waddell (52:44)
 
3 Mile:
1st Male Craig Love (18:29), 2nd Male Ian McNulty (18:53), 3rd Male Bill Smith (20:14)
1st Female Fiona Edwards (22:16), 2nd Female Jane McNeilly (22:22), 3rd Female Catriona Reynolds (24:41)

As well as the serious athletes, there were lots of fun runners (and walkers) participating in each race with 3 generations of families participating together to raise money for a great cause.
 
As well as the Sport Relief races, the Sports Development Section, SportDundee and local sports clubs organised a Come & Try event to encourage people to try out new sports and find out about the clubs in their area.  Sports on offer included tennis, hockey, football, rugby, korfball, boxing, dancing, cricket and athletics.  The fantastic weather and the efforts of the club volunteers made the Come & Try event a real success!
